Inside dentistry’s 2026 shift: AI equipment, market growth, and a needle-free cavity fix

Dentistry is moving through one of its busiest stretches of change in years. Equipment makers are racing to add AI to imaging and diagnostic tools, national surveys are tracking a profession under financial pressure but cautiously optimistic, and a decades-old liquid treatment just cleared its biggest clinical hurdle yet. AI diagnostics and smart equipment move into the mainstream

The clearest trend in dental technology this year is the shift from digital equipment to genuinely intelligent equipment. Analysts at Research and Markets expect the global dental equipment market to grow 9.8 percent year over year to $28.15 billion in 2026, with the market projected to reach $42.38 billion by 2030. That growth is being driven less by new categories of hardware and more by AI layered onto existing tools, including imaging systems, intraoral scanners, and practice management software.

A few concrete examples illustrate the pattern. Dentsply Sirona launched Smart View–Detect in May, an FDA-cleared AI diagnostic aid built to flag periapical radiolucencies on radiographs, giving clinicians a second set of eyes on early signs of infection around the root of a tooth. Overjet has introduced a voice-driven charting tool that listens as a provider talks through an exam and automatically logs hard tissue findings, periodontal measurements, and clinical notes, cutting down on manual data entry during patient visits. Align Technology, maker of Invisalign and the iTero scanner line, continues to expand its digital orthodontics ecosystem, and recently brought together roughly 400 orthodontists at its EMEA Ortho Summit to share how these tools are being used in practice.

Adoption is uneven, though. Roughly 85 percent of North American dental practices now use digital X-ray sensors. Still, only about 35 percent of general dentists own an intraoral scanner, according to industry benchmarking data compiled by WifiTalents. That gap suggests imaging has become table stakes while chairside scanning technology is still working its way into everyday general practice rather than staying confined to orthodontics and implant specialists.

As Dental Reviewed has noted in past coverage, the practices seeing the most value from these tools tend to be the ones that treat AI as a support layer for clinicians rather than a replacement for their judgment. Cost remains the practical barrier. Over the past five years, prices for dental equipment and supplies have risen 23 percent, according to the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute, while reimbursement across all payer types has climbed only 19 percent in the same period. Even so, equipment and technology investment ranked third among the actions practices said they planned to take in 2026, behind only staffing decisions and choices about insurance networks.

What the latest surveys reveal about the state of the industry

The ADA’s Health Policy Institute runs a quarterly panel tracking the economic mood of practicing dentists, and its Q2 2026 update paints a picture of an industry that is busier but not necessarily more profitable. Consumer spending on dental care rose just 1 percent over the prior twelve months. Yet, dentists reported longer appointment wait times and higher patient volume, a mismatch the report attributes partly to patients returning for lower-value services rather than major treatment plans.

Attitudes toward AI are a recurring theme in the survey data. Dentists are notably cautious about using AI for treatment recommendations, with many stressing in their responses that clinical judgment and human verification need to stay central to care decisions. Where they are far more receptive is on the administrative side. About a quarter of dentists said they plan to adopt AI tools for tasks such as reception and check-in, appointment scheduling, insurance verification, billing, and practice analytics. In these areas, automation reduces staff workload without touching diagnosis or treatment.

Staffing continues to top the list of challenges dentists report for 2026, ahead of insurance pressures and rising overhead costs, and around 90 percent of practices say they are still struggling to hire despite a growing pipeline of dental hygienist graduates. On the demand side, roughly a third of dentists say they are not busy enough and could take on more patients, up from about a quarter two years earlier. Separately, the industry’s own equipment ergonomics data suggests part of the staffing strain is physical as well as financial. About 75 percent of dentists report musculoskeletal disorders linked to poor equipment ergonomics. This statistic has pushed some manufacturers to redesign chairs, loupes, and handpieces with clinician posture in mind rather than focusing purely on patient-facing features.

A needle-free breakthrough in cavity treatment

Not every advance making news this year involves new hardware. A phase three clinical trial led by the University of Michigan, published in JAMA Pediatrics, found that silver diamine fluoride, a topical liquid known as SDF, stopped decay progression in more than half of treated baby teeth. The trial included 830 children under age six recruited through dental offices, pediatric practices, and Head Start programs in Michigan, New York, and Iowa. Dentists apply the 38 percent SDF solution directly to a cavity with a small sponge applicator, and the treatment requires no drilling, injections, or sedation. The main tradeoff is cosmetic. The treated area of the tooth permanently darkens.

SDF has been used off-label in the United States for years and has a longer track record internationally, but it has not yet received FDA approval specifically for arresting tooth decay due to a lack of large-scale trial data. Researchers involved in the study say the new results give the agency the rigorous evidence it needs to consider that approval, which would be significant given that tooth decay remains the most common chronic childhood disease in the country, affecting more than 40 percent of children under six.

Between smarter imaging equipment, a workforce recalibrating around AI, and simple treatments getting new clinical validation, dentistry’s news cycle in 2026 reflects an industry trying to do more with tighter margins.
